There are number of ways to approach web site content but there really is only one "right" way to start - with your purpose and your audience. From there it is a matter of writing what you know.

Purpose: Is your goal a site that sells houses for you? An online brochure for your services? An online client lead generation tool? It's likely a combination of all of the above and more, but it's important to identify your primary purpose, and then prioritize your secondary, tertiary goals.

It's next important to identify your niche, Realty in general is a broad spectrum to cover - you may cover multiple categories but it's important to identify them from the start. Questions such as what type of real estate do you handle ? is residential, commercial, new build, sales, purchases, lease etc.

Are you wishing to strengthen and promote the existing strengths withiin your practice or are there new directions or niches you wish to promote and strengthen through your site?

Audience: Audience will reflect in many areas such as volume of content, quantity of images, and language of text copy.

If you have confusion as to what we mean when we discuss Audience we are looking at many different elements including:

  • age - content language (attitude)
  • profession - like age plays into the content language
  • ethnic background - content language (attitude and language) and niche market selection
  • technological savvy - usability, terminology and navigation elements
  • socio-economic profile - primarily looking at the income levels and value on material possession
  • location - elements such a high speed availability vs. dial up users (affect graphic usage

The goal is the identification of subject matter and voice with which to write it in. The clarity of purpose and message will lend to the logical organization of the content for the usability element of making your site an effective tool.

I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.
